HP Proliant Servers - Solutions to Common Download Problems

Overview
The HP Software, driver and firmware download pages on the Business Support Center web site are available to provide you access to software program and utilities, hardware firmware, operating system drivers and other available downloads that can be used to solve problems, maintain, manage or upgrade your HP products.
Getting Started
To access download files availabel on the HP Business Support Center web site, you must first identify your product using the product selector, then choose the relevant operating system and download language. From there, you will be presented a list of available downloads. The available downloads will be categorized by the type of file such as hardware OS Driver, BIOS Firmware, Software programs and utilities, etc. Clicking on the type of file from the category list will move you to that part of the page where those files are shown. You can click on the title of the file to see further information about the download, or click the "Download" button to initiate access to download the file itself. In some cases you’ll see a link called "Obtain Software" instead of the "Download" button. This is simply a means to take you to additional information or instructions that you must see before accessing the download. Some of these links may lead to non-HP websites.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if my HP product needs an update that requires a download?
Answer: You should look for a link on the software/driver page that provides access to a tool that will diagnose problems with your product. There may be several tools, some specific to your product, others more general purpose. A good tool to try is Instant Support Professional Edition. This tool will analyze your product for errors, look for drivers or other files that need to be updated with a download and recommend the appropriate file. Be aware that Instant Support Professional Edition isn’t supported for all HP products at this time. If you can’t find a tool to automatically diagnose your HP product, then you might try browsing or searching for documents that describe the issue you’re having or the improvement you’re trying to make. These documents typically have information on what to do next.
How do I determine the best driver to download and install?
Answer: Please look for links to documents or tools that help you determine which is the best driver to download and install. Instant Support Professional Edition is an excellent tool that will examine the status of drivers on your PC and compare them to what files are available for download. If you need an update, it will recommend the best fit.
I downloaded the file I want, but now I can’t find it – where did it go?
Answer: When you clicked the “Download" button, you were presented a download transaction window from the HP ftp servers. This window gave you the option to save the target file. When you clicked the SAVE option button, a navigation menu appears prompting you to choose a location where the file will be saved. If you click “OK" without choosing a specific location, the file will be saved to a default location. Please write down the default location (or the alternate location of your choice) and the file name before clicking “OK" again. Once the download is completed, open your file explorer and navigate to that directory. When you find the downloaded file on your system, open that file and begin the installation process.
I identified my product and operating system but I don’t see the download file I expected - what do I do now?
Answer: HP supports and provides drivers for operating systems for HP-branded, warranty-replaced, or factory-installed hardware that is shipped on or supported by the product. For example, computers that came with Microsoft Windows Vista® will generally only have Windows Vista drivers available for download from the HP’s Software & Downloads Web site.
The reasons HP may not have software or drivers available include the following:
  • You may already have the latest driver included in your operating system. Operating systems usually come with basic drivers for common components and peripherals. To install the driver, you may just need to use the operating system’s Add New Hardware features.
  • Not all problems require a download to fix them.
    • There may be no driver or software file related to the issue you are trying to resolve and some other problem is causing your product to function improperly. For example, a PC fan, mouse, printer port, hard drive, or USB port do not typically require you to install a driver for them to function. If one of these types of components is not working, you may need to troubleshoot the issue to find what is really going wrong.
    • Some error messages will prompt you to repair or install a specific file. For example, Microsoft Windows may generate the following error:
Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:\system32\hal.dll
In this example, HP would not provide the "hal.dll" file as a download. You would need to repair the operating system to fix the error using troubleshooting instructions. Try searching on the specific error message to find a solution. In some instances, the operating system manufacturer may also provide a download to fix such errors.
  • HP occasionally discontinues supporting and providing drivers for older operating systems (example: Windows 95 or Windows 98). In some instances, drivers may remain available as-is or may be available directly from the discontinued operating system
  • A software or driver has not been tested and qualified for a given operating system. For example, if you have a ten year old printer, it may not be supported on a newer operating system such as Windows Vista.
  • The file you need may be provided by another (non HP-branded) manufacturer (example: NVidia chipset or Lexmark printer). Check to see if the product or device you need a file for is provided on another manufacturer's Web site.
What do I do if I have problems downloading the file I want?
Answer: Firewall issues are a common cause of download problems. Contact your Internet Service Provider (ISP) to ensure that ftp traffic is allowed through its routers. If you have a business firewall, contact your System Administrator for assistance.
Sometimes the use of download managers or download enhancement software can cause downloads to fail. Disable this software and retry the download.
If you updated your Internet browser, operating system, or network recently, this could impact your ability to download effectively. Check your current settings to ensure they are correct.
If you are using the Macintosh OS X operating system software firewall, you may not be able to download effectively with this feature enabled. Check properties and settings for this feature by going to System Properties/Sharing .
If you are using the Windows XP operating system, you should check to see if you have the Internet Connection Firewall enabled.
  1. This is available by going to Start, Settings, Control Panel, Network Connections .
  2. If you are using Dial up, you will see a listing for the Dial Up connection, if you are using a Broadband connection you will see that listing etc.....
  3. Right click on the connection you are using and left click on Properties .
  4. Click the Advanced tab.
  5. You will see the Internet Connection Firewall settings. If the box is not checked, skip the remaining steps. If the box is checked, click on the Settings button near the lower right corner. This will open a box detailing what services can be accessed via the internet. Ensure that FTP Server is checked.
If you’ve tried the solutions above and still can’t get the download to work, or have found that ftp traffic is restricted due to firewall protections that cannot be changed, try to obtain the file via http protocol. See "What do I do if my company firewall restricts access to ftp" below.
How do I know what Operating System I have?
Answer: For Windows computers, the operating system version appears on one of the screens when you first start up your computer (example: Windows XP, Windows Vista).
For MAC computers, you can find the operating system under the Apple symbol in the Mac OS Menu bar at the top of the screen. Open the menu and select “About this Mac". The window will display the Mac OS version.
For instructions on how to determine if you have a 32Bit or 64Bit version of Windows, see the following Microsoft support article.
To determine if you have a 32Bit or 64Bit version of Linux, at the command line, enter the command: uname - a
What if my Operating System is not listed?
Answer: If your operating system is not listed, HP does not currently have software or driver downloads available for your product for that operating system, or they are not available in the language you have chosen. Here are some options if no downloads are listed for your operating system:
  • Try installing the device using the “Add New Hardware" wizard in Windows operating systems. Drivers for some peripheral products (cameras, printers, scanners, etc.) are pre-installed in the operating system and don’t require downloading a new driver.
  • If you are looking for original Pavilion or Presario PC drivers, try using the Application Recovery feature included on the Recovery partition or Recovery discs.
  • If the product you are trying to install is not made by HP, you may be able to find drivers and software downloads from the original manufacturer’s Web site.
  • Visit the HP Web site again later to see if new downloads have been made available.
  • For Linux printer drivers, go to http://hplip.sourceforge.net/supported_devices/index.html to determine if your printer product is supported by HP’s Linux (HPLIP) driver. Most major Linux operating systems (known as “distros") routinely pick up the latest HPLIP software from this SourceForge site and integrate it into their distro so you may already have support for your HP printer product within your Linux distro. If you do not see support for your printer product listed at the SourceForge site, you can go to http://openprinting.org/printer_list.cgi to check for 3rd party support.
  • For MAC, OS X is the top level operating system. Under this operating system listing, HP displays the latest HP Mac driver. Please note with HP Mac drivers, one single driver generally supports different versions (for example Mac OS X v10.2, 10.3, 10.4, and/or 10.5 depending on the product).

NOTE: HP only supports and provides drivers for operating systems for HP-branded, warranty-replaced, or factory-installed hardware that is shipped on or supported by the product.
Why do I get the error message, "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage"?
Answer: Identify the ftp address where the target file is located. The ftp address should look something like this:
ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/printers/software/lj165en.exe
  1. View the browser status bar once you click on the link to obtain the ftp address.
  2. Or, from your browser, obtain the ftp address from the page source.
After you have obtained the current file ftp address for the file you want to download, perform the following steps:
  1. Right click on the web page and select,View ->Source . This should open a file with the page html code
  2. Click Edit -> Find (if using Notepad) and type "ftp.hp.com" in the Find box and click “Find Next " .
  3. The ftp address may be in a format that needs modification like: ftp.hp.com%2Fpub%2Fprinters%2Fsoftware/lj165en.exe
Highlight this text, copy and paste it into your browser address bar.
  4. Replace each "%2F" in the address with "/" so the address looks like this: ftp.hp.com/pub/printers/software/lj165en.exe
  5. Add http:// to the beginning of the address so it looks like this: http://ftp.hp.com/pub/printers/software/lj165en.exe
    Edited FTP Address in Browser
    http://ftp.hp.com/pub/printers/software/lk165en.exe
  6. Hit the Enter key to start the download process.
  7. If you are still having trouble, you can send feedback to webmaster or engage our agents via chat.

Why is my Laptop battery not charging?

Many people spend money unnecessarily replacing laptop batteries when they may have fixed the issue with a simple battery reset or a Drivers update. If you are having problems charging your laptop battery, then reading this post may save you a lot of time, money and frustration!
Batteries do have a finite lifespan (600-1000 charges/ discharges or about 2 years depending on intensity of use) and they can be very expensive to replace, so before throwing out that battery (in an environmentally-appropriate manner of course!), ensure that it has actually reached the end of its life and there isn’t some other problem preventing it from charging.

Fix 1: Battery Reset

To reset your laptop battery you will need to run the battery down completely. Make sure all work is saved as you will run the battery down until the system shuts off. When this happens you should plug in the power cable but DO NOT turn back on the laptop. Wait until you are confident the battery is back to a full charge again and then turn on your laptop.
If this method does not fix your recharging issue then you can try to fix or update your laptop battery drivers by uninstalling and reinstalling them (make sure to create a ‘restore point’ in System Restore before manually updating Drivers files). You can use a Driver Update Tool to keep all your Drivers up-to-date if you prefer not to attempt this manually.

 Fix 2: Update Drivers
You will need to uninstall and reinstall the relevant device drivers via the Device Manager.
- Select Start > (right-click) My Computer > Properties
- Select the Hardware tab
- Select the Device Manager Button
- Under Batteries right-click “Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery” and click Uninstall
Your battery should no longer be visible in the Batteries list. To reinstall it you will need to:
- Select Action menu
- Select Scan for hardware changes
- Your driver should be listed again
You can use a Driver Update Tool to automatically update your Drivers if you are unsure of which ones you require. Driver errors can also occur when the Driver is outdated. For this reason it is necessary to regularly update your Drivers. The easiest way to do this is by using an advanced and reliable Driver update tool.

Test your battery now and if there is still a problem charging, then it may have just reached the end of its’ days and it is time to part company!

Top 5 ways to speed up your PC

“Why is my PC so slow?”

It is almost inevitable that at some point, your once speedy PC, will lose its’ oomph and become more of a hindrance than a help. There are many reasons why this happens, from an overload of redundant software to the existence of SpyWare on your PC.
Few things in life are more frustrating than a slow PC, so we have put together an essential action list of the top 5 things you need to do to keep your PC at peak performance.

1. Get rid of any SpyWare on your PC
SpyWare is exactly what the name suggests – software which is surreptitiously downloaded to your PC and then monitors your internet activities, potentially exposing not only your browsing activities, but also your passwords and other details. As well as posing a huge security risk, SpyWare can also significantly slow down the speed of your PC. If you have noticed a quite sudden drop in your PC’s performance, then SpyWare may be the culprit.
To prevent against SpyWare and other unwanted downloads, you should download Microsoft security essentials here.
Many people also choose to install an anti-SpyWare tool to keep their PC’s safe from future and emerging threats. XoftSpySE Anti-SpyWare is a tool by ParetoLogic which does just that. It is an award-winning tool and it’s not free but if you want the peace of mind of a good anti-SpyWare tool, then XoftSpySE could be a good option for you.

2. Housekeeping: Clean up your files!

You should go through all your program files and use the add/remove programs feature to get rid of any software you don’t use, many of these will be free trials that you don’t use any more but they can take up a lot of space. If you are not sure what a program is – don’t delete it. You can use the Disk Cleanup Tool (see point 4. below) to remove unwanted programs.
You may also be one of those people who stores files ‘temporarily’ on your desktop before getting around to filing them somewhere. File them or delete them.
Every time you start Windows, the operating memory is used for all files that are stored on the Desktop. If you have a lot of files here you are using up your operating memory and unnecessarily slowing your PC. You should store all your files in folders, and if you need to, you can create shortcuts to them on the desktop – these shortcuts have very little negative impact on your PC’s speed.

3. Avoid ‘auto-starting’ files

Many speed issues are caused by PC’s loading a number of software programs on startup. There may be some programs such as Skype that you would like to auto-start when you boot up your PC, but for most programs it is unnecessary.
To disable the auto-start option in a program, or just check if it is enabled, you can do to Start > startup folder or view the options under the ‘tools’ menu within the program itself.

4. Free up some disk space

Your system stores many files indefinitely unless you choose to delete them. Many of these files, such as those in the recycle bin, are completely unnecessary. There are also downloaded program files and temporary internet files which, when deleted, can clear up a lot of space.
To remove these files you should use the Disk Cleanup tool as this tool will identify the relevant files for you and give you the option of deleting some or all of them.
The Disk Cleanup tool helps you to free up space on your hard disk to improve the performance of your computer. The tool identifies files that you can safely delete and then enables you to choose whether you want to delete some or all of the identified files.
Removing the temporary internet files usually has the greatest impact as these files are cached copies of webpages you have visited and are likely to be numerous.
To use the Disk Cleanup Tool, select All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup

5. Speed up data access

Another very useful Windows Utility is Disk Defragmenter which consolidates fragmented files and folders on your PC, storing each file and its components in one place. When files are fragmented, the system must search the hard-drive for elements of a file each time that file is opened. This can slow your PC down significantly.
You should run disk defragmenter on a weekly basis and as well as when you install new programs, add a large number of new files or when your free disk space drops below 15%.
To use the Disk Defragmenter Tool go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Defragmenter.

Fortunately there are some great software tools which can do all of this work for you. Tools like SpeedUpMyPC by UniBlue can save a lot of time and effort. It’s not free but they offer a free scan to identify the main issues slowing down your PC. A very useful tool which can breathe new life into a sluggish PC!

How to speed up and protect your Mac computer

Whether you own a Mac or Windows machine – the universal truth is that you must take good care of your computer if you want it to perform well for many years. Upgrading hardware is not the only way of improving your Mac’s sluggish performance. Although upgrading components usually works, it can be a costly affair. In most cases when there is a dip in performance, it can be easily improved by performing certain maintenance tasks.
Before we take a look at the tasks that help you speed up and protect your Mac, there are a couple of things you must know. Firstly, you should perform these tasks on a regular basis. Secondly, there are many useful software programs available that help you perform different essential Mac maintenance tasks with a single click.

 Get rid of unnecessary applications
Do you download each and every application that catches your eye? There is nothing wrong with this grab-it-all attitude if you delete the unnecessary applications with the same vigor with which you download them. On the other hand, if you incessantly grab the new ones without letting go of the old, unnecessary applications, every new downloaded application puts an additional strain on your Mac’s resources and can slow its performance further. So, open up the Apps folder, browse through it, and delete the applications you have not touched in months.

Limit the applications that start automatically on Login

Does your Mac take longer than usual to start up? If yes, you can easily resolve this issue by restricting the applications that load automatically on startup. To do this, perform these steps:
Go to System Preferences>Accounts
Click your account
Click the Login Items button
Uncheck the box next to applications that are non-essential

 Remove unnecessary widgets
Widgets open on your screen and use up substantial amount of RAM. One or two widgets opened on a Mac with substantial amount of RAM is not a problem at all, but multiple widgets on a RAM-deficient Mac, like a Mac Mini, is the perfect recipe for disaster. If you own a Mac Mini or another Mac machine with limited RAM and have a lot of widgets in the Dashboard, you would do well to heed this advice.

Update your applications regularly

Outdated applications are not only undesirable from the point of view of security, but they are also the cause of slow performance and various software errors. Updating applications manually can be time-consuming, not to mention boring. We recommend you to use MacKeeper, a very useful application for Mac which does many things besides automatically updating outdated applications.

How can get Device Manager Error Code 32

There are various different types of error codes, Device Manager error codes (relating to devices), system error codes and then there are software error codes for individual programs. This post looks at Device Manager Error Code 32 and how to resolve it.
Our post “Fix Windows Drivers: Device Manager Error Codes” provides an explanation of general Device Manager Error Codes and what they mean.
This article focuses on Device Manager Error Code 32 (not System Errors or specific software error codes). This error usually appears when the start type for the device driver is disabled in the Registry.
To resolve Error Code 32 we recommend the following:
Before getting into the details of this error code there are 2 things you should try:
  1. Reboot your computer – this is always a first step to resolving any problems
  2. Undo any recent changes you may have made to Device Manager, this includes any software you may have installed prior to the error appearing
If neither of the above resolve your problem then you will need to either update your Device Drivers, fix your Registry (deleting some corrupt values) or change the start type in the Registry.

Update Device Drivers

To update your Device Drivers, click here to run a free Drivers Scan, this will tell you if the problem is with your Drivers.
If you have checked your Drivers and everything seems in order, then you will need to examine your Registry. You should be a competent computer-user to edit Registry files. If you are uncomfortable with this you can download Registry Cleaner software to do it for you.

Delete UpperFilters and LowerFilters Registry values

The first thing you need to do in the Registry is to delete the UpperFilters and LowerFilters Registry values. Registry values are listed under Registry Keys and these values contain instructions for your Windows installation. You should take a backup of your system and Registry file before making any changes.
As a brief explanation, UpperFilters go between the Operating System and the relevant Driver, and LowerFilters go between the Driver and the relevant hardware (such as CD-ROM drive). These problems are usually associated with DVD and CD-ROM Drives.
  1. Select Start > (in Windows XP then select Run)
  2. In the Search box (or Run box in XP) type in regedit and click OK
  3. In the Registry Editor find the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE folder under My Computer and click the + icon to expand
  4. Using the + icon to expand folders, scroll to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class
  5. Under this folder you should see a series of subkeys which are 32 digits in length
  6. Use the GUID Subkeys list below to ascertain which Global Unique Identifiers (GUID’s) relate to your problem
  7. Once you have found the GUID relating to the problem device, click the registry subkey corresponding to this GUID
  8. You can now locate the UpperFilters and LowerFilters values in the window on the right (you may only see one of these)
  9. Right Click on UpperFilters and select to Delete
  10. Choose Yes to the prompt “Deleting certain registry values could cause system instability. Are you sure you want to permanently delete this value?”
  11. Do the same as above for LowerFilters (ignore any values with .bak extension)
  12. Close Registry Editor and restart your computer

How do I update Drivers or fix Driver errors?

To keep your PC and devices running at their best, you need to ensure that Drivers are kept up-to-date. If you are one of the many people that don't update your Drivers regularly, then your are likely to be experiencing some of the following:
  • slower than usual PC
  • problems with peripheral devices (such as printers, sound, bluetooth)
  • systems freezes or crashes
To update Drivers you can go directly to the manufacturers website and look for any new releases (keep an eye on our blog as we will list new releases under 'Drivers News').
Updating Drivers manually can be a time-consuming and complicated process, which is why most people choose to download a Driver Update Tool to automate this process for them.

Common reasons for a PC running slowly

As many people have been running our benchmark and asking us to explain why their PC is slow we have written this article to try and help them find the cause and fix it.

Note that we are not attempted to cover the other common question of 'why is my PC crashing', in this article but some of these solutions might also help with crashing issues.

This is not intended to be step by step guide for such things as re-installing your O/S or changing BIOS settings, as that would extend over many many pages. Rather is intended to be a short list of things that you can research and check.

Problem:
Spyware & Viruses and other mal-ware are running on your PC using up CPU time, RAM & network bandwidth.
Solution:
Get a good antivirus and anti-spyware scanning program. In some cases of bad infections however it might be quicker, safer and more effective just to reformat the hard disk and re-install the compete operating system.

Problem:
A fragmented disk is causing slow disk access.
Solution:
Files can be written and read from the disk faster if they are stored in a continuous sequence of bytes on the disk. But as files on the hard disk are updated, deleted and created, they become fragmented. Windows has a build in disk defragmenter. Use it every couple of months.

Problem:
3D graphics are slow
Solution:
Make sure you have the latest copy of the device driver for your video card. Then check you have the current copy of DirectX. Video device drivers are complicated pieces of software and as a result it is very common that they are buggy or unreliable. So if you have the latest device driver and still have problems, consider trying the previous versions.

Also check you video hardware acceleration is turned on from the Windows, “display properties” dialog and in DirectX (use Dxdiag.exe for this).

Problem:
Onboard 3D graphics are slow
Solution:
Just about all of the onboard graphics solutions are slow when compared to equivalent generation PCI solutions. The onboard chipsets might have names like, "Express Chipset" or "Extreme chipset" but they are not designed for high performance. They are designed for low price. Consider an upgrade. Especially if you are a 3D gamer.

Problem:
2D is slow plus 3D graphics are slow in windowed mode, but OK in full screen
Solution:
We have seen some Windows skinning applications (like Windows Blinds from Stardock) have a dramatic negative effect on the 2D and 3D video performance. The full screen 3D results are not effected as the normal Windows interface in hidden in this case. Uninstalling Windows Blinds fixes the performance problem.

Problem:
CPU is too hot
Solution:
Your CPU might be overheating and then throttling down to a slow speed. Check your fans, heat sinks and CPU temperature. Clean out any dust in the case. Check the fan outlets are not obstructed. Check this especially if this is a new build or new CPU.

Problem:
Your PC is full of Junk
Solution:
Over time people tend to install more and more software. There has been a trend by software developers over recent years to have their own applications set to automatically start up when the PC is turned on. The more stuff you have running, the less RAM you have and the longer your PC will take to start up. The solution is of course to uninstall stuff you don’t need and stop unnecessary stuff running at start up.

Problem:
Your Operating System is running stuff that you don’t need
Solution:
Windows contains dozens of software services (pieces of software that run when the operating system starts). Most of these are part of the operating systems. Some of which most users don’t need and can be turned off for a minor saving. The detail of what services do what is beyond the scope of this article, but there are lots of articles on the internet about turning off some of these services.

Problem:
PC is slow start and stopping applications & the disk light is on excessively.
Solution:
You might be low of RAM. This might be because you have too much junk running or because you don’t have enough physical RAM. Clean up your junk and or add more RAM. Now-a-days RAM is cheap.

Problem:
PC is slow
Solution:
Upgrade your hardware. If you PC is more than 5 years old, it is never going to run Vista or XP very well. Consider a hardware upgrade.

Problem:
Slow disk access and errors from the disk
Solution:
You might have some corrupted files. Check the S.M.A.R.T. status of the drive to see if the drive itself thinks everything is OK, then try Scandisk to check for file corruption.

Problem:
Slow disk access
Solution:
Check you have the correct motherboard device drivers for your motherboard. If you are just using the default device drivers, you might not be running the hard drive in the faster possible mode (PIO mode vs Bus mastering Ultra DMA mode). Also check you are using the best cable (80 conductor cable vs 40 if using IDE drives).

Problem:
RAM access is slow
Solution:
Check the BIOS RAM timings. Select automatic unless you really know what you are doing. Check you have enough RAM to avoid swapping out to disk all the time. Check the RAM is in the correct slots and matched pairs if you have a dual channel motherboard.

Problem:
The full capacity of my CPUs / Cores are not being used
Solution:
If you are running PerformanceTest then check the number of processes in the Edit / Preferences window matches the number of CPU's and cores that you have in the machine. So as an example, having two Dual core CPUs mean you want 4 processes to max out the CPUs. In some cases it might be possible to disable CPUs or Cores from BIOS. So check BIOS settings as well if you seem to be missing a CPU.

How to Run 32 Bit Programs on a 64 Bit System

So you are thinking about making the jump to your first 64-bit operating system and you aren't sure about your usual 32-bit programs. Microsoft has made it simple to run 32-bit programs with their various 64-bit Windows 7 operating systems. As a matter of fact, you will probably not even know that you are running a 64-bit operating system other than the fact that you are able to use more RAM and run 64-bit programs as well.

Instructions

1. Insert the installation medium into your computer.

2. Run the install program. Windows 7 will automatically store your 32-bit programs into a special folder called "Program Files(x86)." All 64-bit programs will install under "Program Files."

3. Double-click the 32-bit program icon or select the program through the "Start" menu to run.

Tips & Warnings

32-bit drivers and certain programs such as anti-virus software will not run on a 64-bit system. For these packages you will need the 64-bit program.

How to Tell If Your PC Is 32 or 64 Bit

The processor is the hardware component at the center of a modern computer. The processor fetches data from memory and copies it back into memory after having performed computations on it. In the current consumer market, there are processors that can operate on pieces of data that are up to 32 bits in size; more modern processors can operate on 64 bits at a time. The number of bits is an unchangeable characteristic of a given processor, encoded in its circuitry. 64-bit processors can run 32- or 64-bit operating systems (thanks to backwards-compatibility built into their instruction sets), but 32-bit processors can only run 32-bit operating systems. You can easily determine whether your processor and your operating system are running in 32- or 64-bit mode.

Instructions
1. Click "Start," then click "Run." A Run window will come up. Type "msinfo32.exe" into the Run window, then press "Enter." A System Information window will come up.

2. Click "System Summary," then search for the line corresponding to the version of Microsoft Windows installed on the computer. If it contains the indicator "x86," then you are running 32-bit Windows. If it contains the indicator "x64," you are running 64-bit Windows.

3. Click "Hardware Resources," then search for the line corresponding to the processor ("CPU") in the system. If it contains the indicator "x64," you have a 64-bit processor. If it contains the indicator "x86," you have a 32-bit processor that can only run 32-bit software.
